An Attempt to Simplify Grammar: A Historical, Critical Approach
محاولات التيسير النحوي: دراسة تأريخية نقدية

Document Language : Arabic
Abstract : This paper deals with facilitating attempts to simplify Arabic syntax along with the groups and their methods to achieve that goal (facilitation). It also discusses the basis of their approach, documents the observations that their approach was made upon for each group and that contributed to their failure to attain their objective. But knowing that the issue is not a new one and the realization of it goes back to as anciently as the syntax itself, the unity of the problem was the cause of the success of the attempt to treat such problem raised by the ancient grammarians and which led them to author summarized introductions such as “Muqaddimit Khalf Al Ahmar” (180 H), “Jamal Azoujajy” (347 H), Abou Jaffar Al Nahhass (338 H) Ibn Junny (392 H) Ibn Babashaz (454 H) and others. They were then able to attain certain success and realized part of their expectations. As for the modern attempts, the multitude of the objectives, the variety of the aims set forth by their authors and the diversity of methods used, contributed by the same token the multiplicity of the groups to the extent that each group advocated their simplifying perspective while the epidemics was breaking out and the problem and people’s complaints keep persisting further and further. The paper classified the attempts within three main groups. The first group realizing the problem but refuting the simplification sees the solution in the memorization of texts, in the increase in the practice dose and in the preservation of the language and its rules claiming that language is a kingdom whose limits and laws should not be touched but the allegiance falls on both the teacher and the learner. The second group is the one bridging between the authenticity and reform. This group’s simplification approach does not see the solution in the total engagement in reform and disengagement from and rebellion against the ancient and without really envisaging all the affecting factors involved in the transition from the ancient to the novel that takes into consideration the modern cultural and cognitive aspects and environment. But that didn’t make them attain their objective. Instead, their approach led to a much wider variety of resolving methods for the language complexity and the treatment of the complaints that urged them to attempt simplification. They sometimes opt for deleting some chapters or substituting the final stop with a vocalized ending and even cancelling the option of analysis and generation. They finally failed to come up with methodic and practical measures susceptible to help reach success. A third group advocates the cancellation of the functional analysis based on vocalized endings and related factors claiming that such trend was at one time a valid practice for a certain era which no longer deserves to be valid for modern civilization and environment requirements. This group shows a certain agreement with its predecessors in terms of the problem but provides a superficial, emotional and naive treatment. It can even portray hidden vicious intentions. The summary found that the efforts undertaken to treat the problem along with the accompanying simplification attempts – did not achieve any fruitful results throughout a century either because they are not applicable on the language reality or they are confronted with refusal and reservation which contributed to the weakness of the language and facilitated its invasion from other languages, They have also widen the gap between the generation and its Arabic language. Thus, the paper joins a critical view of the past and a future perspective of what yet to come. Allah is the sole guider to what is right.
