Abstract
:
Th e prese nt pap er is an initia l attempt to ada pt the fault-tree methodology o f rel iability enginee ring to the q uantifica tion of sec urity expos ure of computer sys tems . In thi s new context, a fa ult tree can be de scribed as a logic diagram whose input re prese nts bre ach eve nts at var io us sys tem level s, and whose vertices represen t logic operation s or ga tes. Th e root or output of the fault tree ca n be any of the undesired top events. The present pa pe r briefly surve ys a lgo rithms for co nverting the sw itching (Boolean) expression of the ind icato r variab le for the top event into a prob a bility expres sion . Once the top -e vent prob ab il ity is det ermined, it ca n be mult ipli ed by the sys te m's vulnerabi lity to that eve nt to yie ld a qu antified value o f the sys tem's e xposur e to it. T he pre se nt pap er also han dle s the do ubly-stoc hastic problem of est imating the uncertainty in the top-e vent proba bility by usin g an analytic exact formu la re la ting the variance of the top- ev ent probability to the variances of the basic-e vent prob abilit ies. An ex amp le of a typ ical compute r sys tem is pre sented wherein numeri cal estimates are ob ta ined for the top -eve nt prob ab ilit ies and their variances and also fo r the impo rtance ranking of the various bre ach ev ents.
